Teina Pora’s compensation should be reconsidered for inflation, court rules

A judge has opened the door for Teina Pora to get an inflation allowance on more than $2 million of his compensation package for being wrongly convicted of murder.

At the High Court in Wellington on Tuesday, Justice Rebecca Ellis said errors were made in the decision-making process, and that it should be reconsidered.

The judge stopped short of saying the Cabinet’s decision on Pora’s compensation package should be quashed. The real error was not in the decision, but in the advice it was based on, she said.
